MARMOLEUM & LINOLEUM FLOORING IN SAN FRANCISCO

Sustainable flooring made from natural materials. The premium choice for eco-conscious schools, healthcare facilities, and commercial environments.

WHAT IS MARMOLEUM AND LINOLEUM?

Linoleum is a natural flooring material made from linseed oil, pine rosin, wood flour, cork dust, and mineral pigments on a jute backing. First invented in 1860, linoleum represents one of the most sustainable flooring options available — made almost entirely from renewable, natural materials with minimal environmental impact.

Marmoleum is Forbo's brand name for premium linoleum and has become synonymous with high-quality natural flooring. While other manufacturers produce linoleum, Marmoleum sets the industry standard for durability, color consistency, and environmental performance.

Unlike vinyl flooring (which linoleum is often confused with), linoleum contains no PVC, plasticizers, or synthetic materials. It's naturally antimicrobial — the oxidizing linseed oil continues to kill bacteria throughout the floor's life. This makes linoleum particularly valuable in healthcare and educational environments.

Linoleum installation is a specialty skill. The material is installed using a full-spread adhesive, and seams can be heat-welded for a completely seamless, waterproof surface. Flash coving — curving the material up the wall — creates hygienic floor-wall transitions in healthcare settings.

Heat-welded marmoleum with coved corners is one of the most technically complex flooring installations we perform. The material requires precise cutting, exact temperature control during welding, and expert technique for coved corners. Not every contractor can do this work — it's a specialty we've mastered over decades.

Linoleum offers exceptional durability — properly maintained installations can last 30-40 years or more. The color goes through the entire thickness of the material, so wear doesn't reveal a different color beneath. Scratches can even be buffed out, unlike surface-printed flooring products.

At Peacock Floors, we've installed marmoleum in schools, hospitals, and commercial environments throughout San Francisco. Our installers are experts in heat-welded seams, flash coving, and the precision work that marmoleum demands.

WHY CHOOSE PEACOCK FOR THIS SERVICE?

Marmoleum installation is not a job for general flooring contractors. The material requires specific techniques, specialized tools, and years of experience to install properly. Our teams have been working with linoleum and marmoleum for decades and understand every nuance of the material.

Heat-welded seams and flash coving require precision and skill that comes only from experience. We've installed marmoleum in environments where hygienic seamless flooring is critical — from hospital patient rooms to school cafeterias to laboratory spaces.

We work directly with Forbo and other linoleum manufacturers to ensure you get the right product for your specific application. Color matching, wear layer selection, and backing type all matter for long-term performance.

As an LBE, WBE, and SBE certified contractor, we meet the sustainability and procurement requirements that schools and government agencies require for eco-conscious projects.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What's the difference between linoleum and vinyl?

Linoleum is made from natural materials (linseed oil, cork, wood flour), while vinyl is made from synthetic PVC. Linoleum is more sustainable, naturally antimicrobial, and the color goes through the entire thickness. Vinyl is less expensive but doesn't offer the same environmental benefits.

How sustainable is marmoleum?

Marmoleum is one of the most sustainable flooring options available. It's made from 97% natural raw materials, including 72% renewable materials. It's carbon neutral in production, biodegradable at end of life, and contributes to LEED and WELL building certifications.

Why is marmoleum installation more expensive?

Marmoleum installation requires specialized skills that general flooring contractors often don't have. Heat-welded seams, flash coving, and proper adhesive application require training and experience. The installation quality directly impacts long-term performance.

How long does marmoleum last?

Properly installed and maintained marmoleum can last 30-40 years or more. Because the color goes through the entire thickness, wear doesn't reveal a different color. Minor scratches can be buffed out, extending the floor's life further.

Is marmoleum good for schools?

Marmoleum is excellent for schools. It's sustainable (supporting environmental education), naturally antimicrobial (reducing illness spread), durable (handling student traffic), and available in vibrant colors. Many school districts specify marmoleum for new construction.
